The Grand Wagoneer’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Sequoia doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Toyota Sequoia has not been tested.

Full-time four-wheel drive is optional on the Grand Wagoneer. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Sequoia.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer offers an optional 360-degree camera and it also offers an optional rear camera washer to make backing always safe, regardless of road dirt or grime, while the Toyota Sequoia doesn’t offer a camera washer, requiring manual cleaning.

Both the Grand Wagoneer and the Sequoia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Wagoneer for 3 years and unlimited miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Sequoia (5/unlimited vs. 2/25000).

There are almost 2 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

The Grand Wagoneer’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 210 more horsepower (647 vs. 437) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (620 vs. 583) than the Sequoia’s 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Jeep Grand Wagoneer turbo 6 cyl. is faster than the Toyota Sequoia:

Both the Grand Wagoneer and Sequoia have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. The Grand Wagoneer has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The Sequoia requires premium, which can cost on average about 35.1 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Wagoneer has 4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sequoia (26.5 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Sequoia:

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer has larger standard tires than the Sequoia (275/55R20 vs. 265/70R18).

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 65 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Sequoia’s standard 70 series tires. The Grand Wagoneer’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Sequoia Capstone’s 50 series tires.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Sequoia doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Grand Wagoneer flat and controlled during cornering. The Sequoia’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer Air Suspension has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Sequoia TRD Pro (10.1 vs. 9.1 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Grand Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Sequoia doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Grand Wagoneer has 2.1 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front hip room, 1.1 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, 3.5 inches more rear legroom, 2.2 inches more rear hip room, 3.4 inches more rear shoulder room, 3.4 inches more third row headroom, 2.9 inches more third row legroom, .7 inches more third row hip room and 1.8 inches more third row shoulder room than the Sequoia.

The Grand Wagoneer’s cargo area provides more volume than the Sequoia.

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Grand Wagoneer’s optional second and third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Sequoia doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

Maximum trailer towing in the Toyota Sequoia is limited to 9500 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer Quadra-Trac II can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Wagoneer can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Sequoia can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Sequoia Limited/TRD Pro/1794/Platinum/Capstone, the Grand Wagoneer Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard Keyless Enter-N-Go allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Smart Key System standard on the Sequoia doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Grand Wagoneer’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Sequoia’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Grand Wagoneer has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Sequoia doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Sequoia.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jeep Grandeer has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Sequoia and isn’t available on the Sequoia SR5.

The Grand Wagoneer’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Sequoia doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Four Wheeler performed a comparison test in its December 2022 issue and they ranked the Jeep Grand Wagoneer first. They ranked the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro fifth.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer outsold the Toyota Sequoia by over two to one during 2024.
